On September 6th AmCham Georgia hosted AmCham Kyrgyz Republic Delegation on a Cocktail Reception at Mercure Hotel Rooftop Restaurant. AmCham President, Michael Cowgill greeted the guests and introduced AmCham Kyrgyz Republic representatives. Members enjoyed spectacular views over old town and reconnected with each other after the summer. At the same time, guests from both countries had an opportunity to share experiences, gain new contacts and friends.

PHOTOS ARE HERE!

AmCham Georgia jointly with the U.S. Embassy in Georgia, hosted a family picnic celebrating the 241st anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence on July 8th. Over 1500 American, Georgian and international guests enjoyed an American style picnic with a giant barbeque, live bands, bouncy castles, and toys for the children.

The picnic also featured a large variety of family fun activities including face-painting, clowns, ice-cream, pop corn, cotton candy and photos. Everyone could also enjoy the sensation of riding a rodeo horse and being painted by famous caricaturists. Entertainment was provided by rock and roll bands. The Head of Political-Economic Department of the U.S. Embassy to Georgia, Dwight Nystrom and AmCham Georgia President Michael Cowgill welcomed the guests. The American national anthem was followed by a display of phenomenal fireworks.

AmCham Georgia hosted a Cocktail Reception and a presentation by USAID Mission Director Douglas Ball with the Georgian CSR club/CiDA for AmCham members at Betsy’s Hotel. AmCham Executive Director, Mr. George Welton greeted the guests. Mr. Douglas Ball talked about CSR’s importance in the current business environment and opportunities within USAID’s work for the CSR engagement. Representatives of TBC Leasing and Centers for Civic Engagement presented their visions. The presentation was followed by lively discussion among the members and the presenters.

Sarah Williamson, AmCham Vice-President spoke at the Ambassadorial Forum hosted by the US Embassy on April 29. The Forum aimed to celebrate the 25 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Georgia. Keynote speakers included President Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Kvirikashvili. Ms. Williamson spoke on the first session, moderated by Ambassador Ian Kelly, entitled “Democratic Statecraft for Security and Prosperity, Point of Irreversibility” included panelists Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze and former Ambassador to Georgia, Richard Miles too. The second panel entitled “Securing Democracy and Prosperity – Joint Fight for Freedom” was moderated by Ambassador Batu Kutelia, and included panelists former Ambassador to Georgia William Courtney, former Ambassador to Georgia Kenneth Yalowitz, Ambassador Tedo Japaridze, and former Foreign Minister Irakli Menagharishvili.

The event is attended by the Mayor of Tbilisi David Narmania, Georgian Ambassador to U.S. David Bakradze, MCC acting CEO Jonathan Nash as well as representatives of SDSU, MCA Georgia, AmCham, San Diego regional Chamber of Commerce, World Trade Center and Georgian and American business community.

Trade and Transportation Committee Meeting

The Trade and Transportation committee gathered at AmCham offices on 14 March to discuss the common issues faced by member companies which operate within the same industries. The points discussed by the committee included the new amendments to the law on National Bank of Georgia and the effect which the new pricing system in Georgian Laris will impose upon the internationally trading companies. The committee also discussed the Anaklia project and the developments in relation to the Silk Road as well as the potential outcomes which the two projects may bring to various businesses.

Another CLT Committee meeting was held at AmCham offices on 6 March 2017, where the Co-Chair of the Committee Lasha Gogiberidze gave a short presentation on draft labor legislation which is currently being discussed between the employment associations and the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Protection. The Committee also discussed the existing issues relating to registration of liens by the public registry without the court decisions.

AmCham Agribusiness Committee members held a meeting on the evening of February 20th. The new Chair of the committee, Simon Appleby (Kartlos Group LLC) was introduced to the members. The two main issues were discussed: Land Title Administration and Reform of Land Title Formalization as well as Vocational Education in Agribusiness and the role of PPP’s. The committee came up with the specific list of issues to work in future.

Education sub-committee meeting the Minister of Education and Science Aleksandre Jejelava

Representatives of member universities and other educational institutions met the Minister of Education and Science Mr Aleksandre Jejelava today. The main points of discussion were attracting international students in Georgia and fair competition among the private and public universities. The Minister expressed high interest in topics and problems raised by attendees and discussed the possible solutions.

AmCham hosted a monthly roundtable meeting at Holiday Inn on July 20, 2016. Guests were greeted by Michael Cowgill, AmCham’s first Vice-President. AmCham’s Executive Director, George Welton presented about Tax issues in Georgia within the frames of AmCham's USAID grant, through the G4G project, to find out about companies' experience with the Revenue Service Auditors and the Dispute Resolution Council.

CLT Committee Meeting

On July 14th, CLT committee gathered to discuss AmCham's new project financed by USAID grant, through the G4G project with the aim to find out about companies' experience in relation to Revenue Service Auditors and the Dispute Resolution Council. The Members also discussed the issue related to the new law on "accounting, reporting and audit" and current situation related to foreign land registration.

AmCham Members’ Luncheon with Mamuka Bakhtadze, CEO of JSC Georgian Railway

AmCham Georgia hosted a Member luncheon with Mamuka Bakhtadze, CEO of JSC Georgian Railway on July 6, at Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel.

Mr. Bakhtadze presented recent developments of the Georgian Railway system. He also gave an overview of the company structure and its strategy. Mr Bakhtadze outlined a few major projects including the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project and infrastructure developments that could dramatically increase the railway's capacity in the near future. Mr. Bakhtadze answered questions regarding the Deep-Sea port and prospects of using Georgia as the shortest route to transport goods from Europe to Asia and vice versa.

AmCham hosted a monthly roundtable meeting at Tbilisi Marriot on June 15, 2016. US Ambassador to Georgia, Ian C. Kelly provided a disarmingly frank overview of Georgian, US and international politics that included discussion of the Georgian parliamentary election, Georgia's aspiration to join NATO and to gain visa liberalisation as well as Georgian economic, judicial and political reforms and US efforts to enhance those reforms. His presentation was followed by an energetic Q+A.

AmCham - OGP Secretariat Meeting

On 6th June, AmCham hosted the meeting between its members and the representatives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia who act as Secretariat of Open Government Partnership in Georgia. OGP Secretariat briefly overviewed OGP process, Georgia’s achievements and the role of the Private Sector in OGP movement in Georgia . The meeting was followed by questions from the members related to the transparency of government procurement procedures. In the end, secretariat expressed its readiness to further discuss the issues concerning the private sector under the OGP framework.

CSR Committee Meeting

On May 19th we gave our Corporate Social Responsibility committee a new start with Rusudan Kbilashvili, from Wissol Group, chair of the committee.

Rather than engaging in more discussions about what we should do - we have used a piece of BP research on CSR to help us identify some potential priority areas.

AmCham hosted a monthly roundtable meeting at Tbilisi Marriott Hotel on May 18, 2016. Nicholas Berliner, Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy opened the meeting with a political and economic environment review.

Mr. Berliner was followed by Tamar Sanikidze, Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, who presented about ongoing education reforms and public-private partnership in education sector.

On April 14 AmCham hosted Kenneth Angell, the Managing Director in the Finance Department Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) who presented about OPIC's activities in Georgia, the process of applying for an OPIC loan and the opportunity that it can represent to qualified members. The presentation was followed by Cocktail Happy hour where members had an opportunity to reconnect with each other.

On 11 April 2016, AmCham Board of Directors hosted AmCham Board hosted a dinner with the Co-chairs of the Economic, Energy, and Trade Working Group under the Georgia-U.S. Charter on Strategic Partnership - Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Tong and Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Thomas Melia. The meeting was also attended by Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State Vaughan Turekian and US Embassy and USAID representatives.

George Welton, Execute director of AmCham, together with tax experts from member companies presented the summary of the Estonian Model. The intention of the meeting was to communicate to members about the plan and to gain opinions from members about any immediate issues that AmCham should discuss, clarify or recommend to the government.

CLT Committee Meeting

The package of the new draft amendments to the tax Code was the main topic for last CLT Committee meeting. Members agreed that proposed changes should have positive impact on the businesses. Because of the big interests to the topic, AmCham will be organizing roundtable on 9th March related to mentioned issue, where members will have possibility to discuss the draft provisions. CLT members also discussed issues related to production losses and ongoing judiciary reforms.

American Chamber of Commerce in Georgia (AmCham Georgia) hosted the Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili for a special Members Luncheon event on February 26, 2016 at the Funicular Restaurant. PM Kvirikashvili provided his insights on trends and challenges in Georgia’s economy, new tax legislation, Estonian model and economic & political relations. The event was attended by over 200 representatives from AmCham member companies. Members had the opportunity to engage in discussions with the Prime Minister during the question and answer session.

On February 18 AmCham hosted NBG President, Giorgi Kadagidze, who will finish his 7-year term as the Governor of the National Bank of Georgia at the end of the month. Mr. Kadagidze discussed Georgian monetary issues, the state of the Georgian economy, future development of value of GEL and his time at the National Bank. The presentation was followed by Cocktail Happy hour where members had an opportunity to reconnect with each other.

Fatema Sumar, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Regional Deputy Vice President, Europe, Asia, the Pacific and Latin America presented today at AmCham Roundtable about opportunities for public private partnership and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education through the MCC Compact. Ms. Sumar was interested to hear from AmCham members about their experience in Georgia and labor market challenges that employers face in technical fields.

Trade and Transportation Committee Meeting

On 21st January Trade and Transportation Committee meeting was relaunched with updated composition. The purpose of the meeting was to identify issues and problems for discussion related to the profile of the committee. Among discussed issues were: bureaucratic obstacles in regulations related to trade, government tenders, ideas on promoting Georgia as logistical hub, EU regulations on importing EU origin products through third countries, free trade agreements negotiated by Georgia, traffic problems in Tbilisi. Members agreed to meet in 4-5 weeks’ time to set further action plan/points related to discussed issues.

This included a discussion of recent changes in the political environment in Georgia and what this might mean for political and economic reform, as well as issues relating the environment including developments in Iran, Turkey and Russia.
